Tropical Storm Maria formed, threatens Caribbean islands with possible hurricane strength
Tropical Storm Maria formed in the Atlantic Ocean is expected to become a hurricane early next week before slamming already hard-hit Caribbean islands.

The National Hurricane Center said Maria is located about 545 miles east-southeast of the Lesser Antilles with maximum sustained winds of 50 miles per hour.

It is moving west at 16 miles per hour, prompting hurricane watches for Guadeloupe, Antigua, Barbuda, St. Kitts, Nevis, Montserrat, St. Maarten, Anguilla, Saba and St. Eustatius – some of which were devastated by Hurricane Irma. The death toll from Irma was 38 in the Caribbean islands.
